How can I tell if an AI trading algorithm is fake?

Ask what the AI actually does, what data it was trained on, how it was tested on unseen data, what the full live record shows and where your money is held. Vague answers and guaranteed returns are red flags.

Fake AI Trading Algorithms: How to Tell Real AI from Marketing

How to tell whether an "AI trading algorithm" is real AI, an ordinary robot with an AI label, or a scam, with the questions that expose fake AI claims.

"AI", "neural network", "machine learning" and "quantum" now appear on almost every trading product. Some products genuinely use these techniques. Many are ordinary rule-based robots with a new label, and some do no trading at all. Regulators call misleading AI claims "AI washing". Here is how to tell the difference.

Three kinds of "AI trading" products

1. Real machine learning, honestly described

The model is trained on historical data to estimate probabilities, classify market conditions or size positions. Honest providers explain what the model does, what data it uses, how it was tested on data it never saw, and that it still loses. Even real AI cannot predict news or guarantee profit.

2. Ordinary robots with an AI label

Moving average crossovers, grid systems or martingale robots relabelled as AI. The label adds nothing except price and confidence. Many of these produce smooth results that hide large risk. See no-risk forex Expert Advisors.

3. No algorithm at all

A dashboard showing invented profits, attached to a Ponzi scheme or a platform that keeps deposits. The "AI" is a story. See automated forex trading scams.

Questions that expose fake AI

What exactly does the AI do? Forecast direction, classify the market regime, filter trades, size positions? A vague answer such as "it analyses millions of data points" is not an answer.
What data was it trained on, and over what period?
How was it tested on data it never saw? Ask for out-of-sample or walk-forward results. See forex robot backtest scams.
How often is it retrained, and how do you stop it overfitting?
What is the live record, including losing months and maximum drawdown?
Where is my money held? If the answer is not "in your own account at a regulated broker", stop.
What happens when it is wrong? Every model is wrong often. A seller who says it is never wrong has told you everything you need to know.

Red flags in the marketing

Guaranteed or fixed returns.
Win rates above 90 percent.
"Developed by former hedge fund or NASA engineers" with no names or proof.
Countdown timers and limited spots.
Testimonials from people you cannot verify, or videos of celebrities that may be deepfakes.
A price that is low for a product that supposedly prints money.
