How to Reclaim Funds from an Unregulated Forex Platform (and Avoid Recovery Scams)
Realistic options for reclaiming money lost to an unregulated forex or bot platform: chargebacks, bank fraud claims, exchange freezes, regulators, lawyers, and how to avoid recovery scams.
Getting money back from an unregulated forex or bot platform is hard, but it is not always impossible. Your chances depend mostly on how you paid and how quickly you act. This guide sets out the realistic routes and the trap that catches many victims a second time: the recovery scam.
Act quickly
Many recovery routes have deadlines measured in weeks or months. Start today, even if you are still unsure whether the platform is a scam.
Route 1: Card chargebacks
If you paid by debit or credit card, ask your card issuer for a chargeback, explaining that the service was not provided as described or that you were deceived. Card networks set time limits, often around 120 days from the transaction or from when you should have received the service, though rules vary. Provide your evidence and be precise.
Route 2: Bank fraud claims
For bank transfers, contact your bank's fraud team immediately. Transfers can sometimes be recalled if caught early. In some countries, banks must consider reimbursement for authorised push payment fraud; in the UK, for example, there are reimbursement rules for many such payments. Ask your bank what applies to you.
Route 3: Payment apps
PayPal, Wise and similar services have dispute processes, but "friends and family" payments usually have little protection. File quickly anyway.
Route 4: Cryptocurrency
Crypto transfers cannot be reversed by your bank. However:
- Report the receiving wallet addresses to the exchange you sent from and, if you know it, the exchange that received the funds. Exchanges sometimes freeze accounts linked to fraud.
- Report to law enforcement (ic3.gov in the US). Authorities have seized and returned crypto in some cases.
- Keep transaction IDs (hashes) for every transfer.
Route 5: Regulators and police
Regulators rarely recover individual losses directly, but reports support investigations, asset freezes and court-ordered restitution. In the US, the CFTC obtained an order for over 1.7 billion dollars in restitution in the Mirror Trading International bot case. Report to the CFTC and IC3 in the US, Action Fraud and the FCA in the UK, or the police and FSCA in South Africa. See how to report a forex signal scam.
Route 6: A qualified lawyer
For large losses, a licensed lawyer can advise on civil claims, freezing orders or joining a group action. Choose one you find yourself through your local bar association, check their licence, and be cautious about anyone who contacted you first.
The recovery scam
After a loss, victims are targeted again by people who promise to recover the money for an upfront fee. They may call themselves recovery agents, blockchain investigators, ethical hackers, lawyers or even regulators. Warning signs:
- They contacted you first, often after you posted about your loss or filed a complaint.
- They want a fee upfront, often in crypto.
- They guarantee success or claim they have already located your funds.
- They claim to be from a regulator or police. Regulators and police do not charge you to recover money.
- They ask for remote access to your computer or for your passwords.
If you are unsure, contact the regulator directly using contact details from its official website.
Prevent the next loss
- Keep money only in your own account at a regulated broker.
- Never pay fees to release withdrawals. See forex bot withdrawal fee scams.

Bottom line
Your best chances come from your own bank, card issuer, exchange and the authorities, approached quickly and with good evidence. Anyone else who promises to get your money back for a fee is most likely the next scam. Our ebook Signal or Scam? includes the full recovery checklist.
